Building the food transparency commons together

Open Food Facts is a citizen project of general interest, built by tens of thousands of volunteers worldwide who believe everyone has the right to know what's in their food. Since 2012, we've grown from a small community project into a global database used by millions of people and thousands of apps and research projects—all while maintaining our independence and commitment to the common good.

Our independence: A cornerstone of trust

We are strictly independent from the food industry. To ensure we remain an unbiased source of information, we do not accept any financial support from companies or foundations connected to the food industry. This independence is not negotiable—it's what allows us to provide objective, transparent information that truly serves the public interest, free from commercial influence or conflicts of interest.

While we refuse industry funding, we warmly welcome collaboration with food producers who want to contribute to transparency by automatically integrating data and photos of their products into our open database. Transparency benefits everyone: consumers, honest producers, and public health.

Every contributor is a partner

You are a partner of Open Food Facts. Whether you've scanned a single product, made a monthly donation of 2 euros, or contributed code to our platform—you are part of this collective effort. Open Food Facts belongs to everyone who contributes to it. Each individual donor, each volunteer, each person sharing their time or resources is a true partner in building this commons for food transparency.

Our funding model reflects our values: we grow through individual donations and grants from public institutions and foundations committed to the common good. This community-based support ensures we remain accountable to citizens, not to corporate interests.

Funding the commons vs. project-by-project funding

Most of our financial support comes in the form of project-specific grants—funding designated for particular developments like our mobile app, environmental or health impact, or advanced search features. While these targeted grants are valuable and allow us to achieve important milestones, they don't cover the day-to-day costs of running a living, growing commons.

The infrastructure that supports millions of users (servers, databases, maintenance, community support…) requires stable, unrestricted funding. This is where individual donations make all the difference. When you donate to Open Food Facts without restrictions, you help us keep the lights on, respond to urgent needs, and invest in the long-term sustainability of this shared resource.

Think of it this way: project grants build new features, but general contributions maintain the foundation. Both are essential, and both make you a valued partner in our mission.

Open Food Facts fick ekonomiskt stöd från Europeiska kommissionen och DRG4Food-programmet för att utveckla NutriSight, en teknik utformad för att automatiskt extrahera näringsinformation från produktbilder.

DRG4Food är ett EU-projekt som syftar till att främja förtroendet för ett datadrivet livsmedelssystem genom att implementera mål för digitalt ansvar (DRG).


Franska republiken - AIC

Open Food Facts stöds av Acce‐rateur d'initiatives citoyennes (AIC), ett program som lanserades av den franska regeringen genom Direction Interministeôrielle du Numeôrique (DINUM).

AIC tillhandahåller metodologiskt, tekniskt, administrativt och ekonomiskt stöd för att hjälpa medborgarinitiativ som tjänar allmänintresset att befästa sina modeller och uppnå viktiga utvecklingsmilstolpar.

The Nutri-Score was developed by the EREN Nutritional Epidemiology Research Team which uses the Open Food Facts database to check the validity of Nutri-Score in different countries.

EREN

NutriNet-Santé is a cohort study that tracks the nutrition and health of volunteers for several years. EREN uses NutriNet data cross-referenced with Open Food Facts data to study the long-term effects of food additives.

DIVINFOOD

Open Food Facts är partner i DIVINFOOD-projektet, som finansieras av Europeiska unionens forsknings- och innovationsprogram Horisont 2020.

Projektet syftar till att utveckla livsmedelskedjor som betonar underutnyttjad agrobiologisk mångfald, i syfte att motverka minskning av biologisk mångfald och möta konsumenternas efterfrågan på hälsosamma, lokala produkter som bidrar till hållbara livsmedelssystem.


AFNIC foundation

The AFNIC foundation for Digital Solidarity supports the development of a united internet, training and awareness of its uses, by supporting local and structuring digital solidarity initiatives and research projects on the theme of digital solidarity.

The foundation is supporting Open Food Facts's environmental and educational efforts to make food not only good for you, but also good for the planet.


ADEME

ADEME fights against global warming and the degradation of resources.

Open Food Facts uses data on the environmental impact of food taken from ADEME's Agribalyse database.
